Mexico resuscitates dos Santos

The word resuscitation means to restore consciousness, vigour, or life to. This is the feeling Giovani dos Santos gets when he plays for El Tri.

His last goal was a spectacular one. Giovani dos Santos received the ball from Gerardo Torrado and beat goalkeeper Tim Howard. Dos Santos controlled the ball and walked past the rushing Howard and Carlos Bocanegra and then chipped the ball over Eric Lichaj who stood on the goal line and could not prevent Giovani from scoring. That goal made it 4-2 in favour of Mexico which ensured CONCACAF Gold Cup victory over their rivals the United States in the final of the tournament. The Mexican’s goal was the best way to grace the occasion at the Rose Bowl Arena in Pasadena. Mexico played better than the hosts (even though they were trailing 2-0 very early on) and Giovani initiated most of the team’s attacks, playing behind Chicharito. With the ball at his feet, the son of a former Brazilian footballer was difficult to stop by the USA defence.

Tottenham Hotspur fans will not understand why Giovani does not replicate that form in England. Six years ago dos Santos was one of the greatest talents in the world. Along with Lionel Messi, he was the star of La Masia (the Barcelona youth team) until a move to The Spurs in 2008 (for six million euros) changed his fate. In England, he was never able to prove his worth for the Spurs. Dos Santos was first loaned out to Ipswich Town and then to Galatasaray in Turkey. At the beginning of last season, he was brought back to White Hart Lane, but again he could not earn himself a first team place. He made only three appearances for manager Harry Redknapp and was later sent on loan to Racing Santander in January. Since then, the attacking midfielder has never looked back. He has been able to rediscover his old form. In the United States, he continued from where he ended the La Liga season.

Giovani dos Santos is Mexico’s diamond; he is their main man.  Javier Hernandez, who made all the headlines with Manchester United last season  benefited from Giovani’s supplies.Hernandez did not score in the final but he was the tournament’s top scorer with seven goals and adjudged  Player of the Tournament. The rest of the team consists mainly of a number of veterans and some players who are still waiting for a breakthrough. Pablo Barrera, who scored a brace against the United States in the final moved to West Ham for five million euros in 2010,but he could not fight his way into the first team.Right back Efrain Juarez who plies his trade in Scotland was rarely used by Celtic last season. Mexico also had five players suspended due to a doping scandal, but still won the North and Central America championship .

General Secretary of CONCACAF,Charles “Chuck” Blazer was impressed with this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. Attendances were quite impressive but performances on the pitch were below par. The tournament is still a two horse race between Mexico and the United States and something has to be done about very soon. The Gold Cup will never be taken seriously by FIFA if things do not change.
