Mexico have never beaten an African team in the World Cup in three attempts.

This is only the second meeting between Mexico and Cameroon; Mexico won 1-0 in a friendly in Los Angeles in 1993.

Even while fielding a third-string team, Mexico had little trouble beating Cameroon, 1-0 at the Coliseum on 22nd September 1993.

That goal came in the 51st minute, after an attempted backheader from defender Rigobert Song, who was making his national team debut, to his goalkeeper was intercepted by Daniel Guzmán. Guzmán ‘s high shot from the left side easily flew past goalkeeper Alioum Boukar of Cameroon.
