The Eredivisie in Numbers: How Ajax’s season reached yet another new low

It’s been another unforgettable Eredivisie season, with Arjan Veurink’s Twente crowned Dutch champions for the 5th time. The Eternal Bridesmaid, Ajax, had the same number of points (56) as the champions, but the team from Enschede had a superior goal difference of 23. As the new Eredivisie season starts in September, we look at some of last season’s interesting statistics.

79- Telstar conceded 79 goals this season, more than any other side. Champions Twente scored the same number of goals (79) as Telstar. Ironically, Twente’s biggest win of the season was against Telstar – an 8-1 win in February. The Velsen based club have failed to replace Oranje defender Stefanie van der Gragt who joined FC Twente. Stefanie van der Gragt has made another mega transfer this summer as she has joined German champions FC Bayern.

You will not believe this but Stefanie van der Gragt made a total of 79 league appearances for Telstar. FC Bayern have really signed a gem.

67 – Champions FC Twente have signed Barbara Lorsheyd to replace the recently retired Marieke Ubachs. PEC Zwolle goalkeeper Nadja Olthuis and Telstar goalkeeper Barbara Lorsheyd kept 0 clean sheets this season. Both goalkeepers conceded 67 goals, more than any other Eredivisie goalkeepers. Twente fans will not forget Ubachs if Lorsheyd replicates her Telstar form in Enschede.

51 – goals between Jill Roord, Ellen Jansen and Renate Jansen established the Twente trio as the most prolific strike partnership in the Eredivisie. Jill Roord contributed 21 goals, Ellen Jansen scored 17 goals and her Dutch counterpart Renate Jansen 13.

45 – Long-serving player and captain Maayke Heuver has left FC Twente after 9 years at the club. She made 154 league appearances for the Dutch champions and scored 45 goals.

21 – Top scorer Jill Roord scored 4 more goals than last season’s goal queen Lineth Beerensteyn (17) of ADO Den Haag, who has recently joined FC Twente.

Vivianne Miedema is the only top goal scorer who has scored more goals than Roord in a single season. The two are the only players to score more than 20 goals in a single season. FC Bayern’s striker scored 39 goals in her last season at Heerenveen.

19 – years and 28 days is the age at which Jill Roord became the fourth-youngest top goalscorer in the Eredivisie. The Oldenzaal native broke the deadlock in Twente’s 3-0 win of PEC Zwolle on the last day of the season to move behind Vivianne Miedema, Lineth Beerensteyn, and Karin Steevens on the ranking. Ironically, she is not in Oranje head coach Arjan van der Laan’s plans.

18- Champions FC Twente won 18 games this season, one more than Ajax who lost the penultimate game of the season after leading all season. Renate Jansen’s winner against Ajax on May 16 was the difference between  the two sides and determined the winner of the league. Four years of hoping and praying have not come to an end for Ajax.

17 – PEC Zwolle lost 17 Eredivisie games; more than any other side. Ajax lost only 2 games all season – both to eventual champions Twente – as they failed to secure their first top-flight title.

15- Ajax kept 15 clean sheets in 24 games – 6 more than Dutch champions Twente – thanks to their solid defence and goalkeepers. Ajax will miss one of their key players in defence as captain Petra Hogewoning has retired from football. The Amsterdammers have signed Belgian international Davina Philtjens to fill that void.

11- Ajax had the best defensive record in the league as they conceded only 11 goals all season; one of those goals against Twente which cost them the league title.

10- Ajax goalkeeper Elixabete Sarasola kept 10 clean sheets. Marieke Ubachs of FC Twente did it 8 times while ADO Den Haag goalkeeper Jennifer Vreugdenhil kept 7 clean sheets.

9- PSV’s Myrthe Moorrees is the only player in the top 10 goal scoring list who failed to score more than 1 goal in a game. She scored 9 goals in 9 different games.

8- Telstar’s Babiche Roof has completed her best Eredivisie season scoring 8 goals in 23 games.

7- One word can be used to describe AFC Ajax striker Chantal de Ridder – consistency. De Ridder had scored 7 league goals every season before the start of the season. The former Eredivisie top scorer could not do it this season. She needed 1 goal to repeat that feat.

6- Only Daphne Koster has won more Dutch Championships than FC Twente’s sextet. The veteran has extended her contract with Ajax for another season. Daphne has never scored for Ajax. Will this be the year to do that?

FC Twente won their last 6 Eredivisie games, a winning streak that helped them win the title.

5- Maud Roetgering, Maayke Heuver, Marthe Munsterman, Ellen Jansen, Anouk Dekker (joined Montpellier in January) and Siri Worm have now won the Eredivisie on 5 occasions.

4- FC Twente became the first team to win the Eredivisie for the 4th successive season. Only AZ Alkmaar (2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10) and Twente had previously managed to win three Eredivisie titles in a row. Twente now overtake AZ Alkmaar by winning their 5th title in 6 seasons.

3- ADO Den Haag is Tessel Middag’s favourite opponent. The Manchester City midfielder scored against ADO Den Haag in 3 different seasons for Ajax. The former ADO Den Haag midfielder spent 4 seasons in Amsterdam before moving to the FA WSL.

2- Ajax goalkeeper Elixabete Sarasola saved two second-half penalties as Ajax beat ADO Den Haag 2-0 in April.

1- The number of teams making their Eredivisie debuts next season: Achilles’29 are the only Eredivisie debutants this year. They will be the first side from Gelderland to compete in the Eredivisie.

0- wins in 19 league matches was the run that came to a spectacular end for PEC Zwolle in March when they beat FC Twente 2-1; their first win of the season. PEC Zwolle managed to win just 2 games all season.
